Slides The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union has accused electric vehicle manufacturers like Zypp Electric, EVeez, Scoot and Eagle (Shema Electric) of flouting crucial safety regulations. The union alleged that EVs offered by the companies violate the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) in terms of their weight, speed and motor power. They have also claimed that the vehicles lack the proper certification and are not registered with the RTO. These compliance issues are a major concern for gig workers, as they are not just a safety risk but also a hindrance to insurance claims. However, EV companies Medianama spoke to denied these complaints. Medianama’s Vallari Sanzgiri explains the union’s concerns and why it could affect all of us. “One thing that we have to understand is that if the gig workers have some merit in their allegations, we have to think how widespread these violations could be. Is it restricted to Telangana or has it branched out everywhere else? We also have to ask what kind of oversight mechanisms are in place for EV rentals in the gig economy,” she said. “Also, how would this affect food delivery giants like Swiggy and Zomato, as their drivers often use EVs?” Watch the video to know more: Also Read:
