As generative AI startups gain momentum, we highlight top markets and what software buyers are saying about players in the space.
Our Generative AI Market Map features 300+ startups developing genAI applications and infrastructure across 50 categories.
Private companies in the genAI space have raised record funding in 2023 so far.
Below, we break down a few categories on the map and what customers are saying about these technology vendors.
Text generation
Since OpenAI’s launch of its GPT series, language models have grown bigger and better, leading to breakthroughs in AI sentiment analysis, translation, and reading comprehension.
In customer support, Forethought has raised over $90M in equity funding. Its AI tools triage messages, route tickets, and predict user intent and sentiment.
The buyer below, who also evaluated competitors like Ada, Amelia, Aisera, and LivePerson, highlights Forethought’s flexibility as a differentiator.
FORETHOUGHT
Forethought is focusing now on deploying workflows together with you. That’s the main differentiation. They are much more flexible…in terms of trying to solve ticketing with a faster pace than the others and a fuller, more personalized integration on working on the workflow with you is the main differentiation I see with them.— Divisional CTO, Fortune 500 company

Speech & audio generation
Speech and audio generation has benefited from top-down research by big tech companies, like Google DeepMind and Baidu.
Private market vendors are using AI to generate hyper-real synthetic voices, clone a person’s voice to generate additional audio content, and more.
Descript, an audio and video editing tool, raised $50M in Series C funding from OpenAI, a16z, and others in October 2022.
DESCRIPT
The training materials have been outstanding from Descript. They’ve just got a tremendous strength in terms of the videos and the written material…there’s a whole self-guided tutorial that everyone could use which allowed you to learn all the multimedia editing capabilities for visuals as well as the audio…the capacity to use that training material and not to have to produce it for all the people in our organization and to have it be such high-quality material was really a differentiation point. — Director, Public university

Generative AI infrastructure
This market features companies across foundational models & APIs (like OpenAI), vector database tech, machine learning operations (MLOps).
In MLOps, startups like Fiddler AI help companies develop, manage, and monitor AI models.
FIDDLER AI
We wanted to monitor our machine learning models in production to see their performance and not have a blind flight when having machine learning models used in our products. I compared five different vendors and decided for Fiddler in the end because they had the biggest set of features and it was easy to implement into our services…what stood out in particular was their explainability feature, which is very helpful, and their feature to write SQL-like queries to get and analyze different slices of data. — Data Scientist, VC-backed workforce management company
